Worries

Since my last update, there have been more worries added instead of relieved. I took little man to a lactation nurse to see if we could work on breast feeding, and we discovered that he has a "high" or "bubble" palate as well as just an okay suck, and that was making it difficult for him to transfer enough milk. We talked over our options, and both determined that exclusive pumping and then bottle feeding the expressed milk was the best plan. This has been extremely difficult, and every day I feel like giving up but keep going knowing that breast milk is best. After 2 more weekly weigh-ins, however, Xavier is gaining less weight each time. Per his doctor the amount of milk I'm feeding him should be more than enough for good weight gain, but for some reason it's not. So as of yesterday we had some labs done, and are fortifying his breast milk bottles with formula to increase his caloric intake. We will re-weigh tomorrow as well and see if his labs show anything, and then go from there. If he doesn't gain by tomorrow he may have to be hospitalized, so please keep us in your thoughts as we try and get through this difficult time and find some answers!

Weighty Issues, an Update

At his 2 month appointment, Xavier hadn't gained enough weight. That was of course concerning to us, although his exam was normal and he's meeting his milestones. His Dr. had me pump for 24 hours to see how much milk I was producing and to see how much X would take. We found I was making plenty of milk, but little man is a lazy nurser and not taking enough! So for a week and a half I mainly pumped and at the end X gained about an ounce a day! As of Monday he weighed 8 lbs 5 oz. Now the problem is whether he'll ever be able to breast feed, seeing as he prefers them as a pillow over a food source...
Wish us luck as we continue to try and fatten him up!
